Christmas 1997

Playing carols outside a UK supermarket at Henley-on-Thames in December.

A chilly day, the sun was shining but the wind was biting. Watching the shoppers walk into the warm store was cruel. Never mind the reward was collecting for charity and of course the warm coffee afterwards!

Cruising down the Rhine

The 30 members of the Calcot-based South Berks Concert Band just got their breath back after a whirlwind five day visit to Germany, before they embarked on their summer concert programme. The band played three concerts during its stay in the Rhine Valley.

The first was on a traditional steamer travelling from Koblenz to Boppard. The following day, the band moved to the concert hall at Bad Neuenahr, a popular spa resort, before finishing the tour with a market place concert in the historic wine town of Rudesheim. Fine weather helped to swell the attendances at the outdoor concerts.

Musical director Jeff Anderson said: " The highlight was definitely the superb hall at Bad Neuenahr. The acoustics were excellent and helped bring the best out of the players."
